Dr. Michael Safir, MD is a board-certified urologist in southern California who is one of a handful of urologists in the world with individual fellowship training and experience in both male and female genital reconstruction. Dr. Safir gained signicant experience performing gender-affirming genital procedures for five years at one of the highest volume gender surgery centers in the world. This vast experience in both urology and gender surgery has made him a popular Gender Surgeon. Dr. Safir is now affiliated with Align Surgical Associates in Los Angeles.

Dr. Safir offers Orchiectomy and the Penile Inversion method of Vaginoplasty. During this procedure, skin from the penis and scrotum are used to construct the vaginal vault. The urethra is shortened and placed in the female anatomical position. The testicles are removed (Orchiectomy) and the scrotal skin is used for the creation of the labia (Labiaplasty). The nerves of the glans and some glans tissue are used to make the clitoris (Clitoroplasty).
Penile Inversion Vaginoplasty is usually a one-stage procedure, though occasionally secondary procedures are performed to augment the aesthetics of the vulva.
Surgery Requirements
Dr. Safir is a member of WPATH and follows the Standards of Care guidelines for surgery:
- You will need to provide two referrals from qualified mental health professionals.
- A letter from your hormone specialist stating you have been on 12 months of continuous hormones, unless clinically contraindicated.
Financing & Insurance
Dr. Safir accepts credit/debit cards, cashier's check, money order, wire transfer and medical financing via CareCredit. He also accepts insurance from a wide range of providers and most managed Medi-Cal plans. Medicare is not accepted.
Booking a Consultation
Dr. Safir is available for phone or in-person consultations in Los Angeles for a fee of $200. An in-person consultation is not required for booking a surgery date.
